Omagh Resident Named ‘Community Climate Champion’: A Celebration of Local Environmental Leadership

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council proudly announces Davy Fenton from Omagh as the Community Climate Champion for April 2025. This award celebrates individuals and groups making a real difference in protecting our environment and promoting sustainable living.

Davy earned this honor for his exceptional work at St Conor’s Primary School. He transformed a neglected grassy area into a vibrant outdoor space, complete with a mud kitchen, seating, and planting zones, along with the start of a sensory garden. This transformation not only provides a rich learning environment for the students but also enhances biodiversity, inviting nature to thrive.

With these changes, Davy leaves a lasting legacy at the school. He inspires children to connect with the natural world, encouraging them to take an active role in caring for the environment. His consistent efforts will help future generations nurture a sense of responsibility toward our planet.

A spokesperson from St Conor’s praised Davy, highlighting his work as enriching the school’s half-acre site. “Davy’s creativity has helped us develop a ‘forest school’ environment where kids can grow in many ways—physically, socially, and emotionally,” they said. “His humble nature makes him a vital part of our community, and he truly deserves this award for his positive impact on the environment.”

This award aligns with a growing trend in sustainability, as communities globally are recognizing the importance of local efforts in environmental stewardship. According to a recent survey by the Environmental Protection Agency, communities with active environmental programs see a 30% increase in local recycling rates. Engaging volunteers like Davy exemplifies how grassroots movements are crucial in tackling climate change.

Nominations for the Community Climate Champion program are open all year. The council encourages submissions for those involved in recycling, litter picks, biodiversity efforts, energy-saving projects, or anything that promotes sustainable living.
