Oman Takes Center Stage at Landmark African Climate Talks in Nairobi

NAIROBI: Oman recently took part in the 20th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Nairobi, Kenya. Led by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Oman’s Environment Authority, the conference marked the 40th anniversary of AMCEN. This event celebrated significant progress in environmental efforts across Africa, notably in sustainable development, biodiversity protection, and climate change actions.

Dr. Abdullah commended AMCEN for its vital role in uniting Africa’s environmental goals and amplifying its influence on the global stage. He pointed out the strong partnership between AMCEN and the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), emphasizing their joint mission to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

During the conference, he outlined future initiatives that focus on using science to inform policy, securing sustainable climate financing, promoting AI technology for environmental monitoring, and encouraging inclusive green transformations.

In addition to these discussions, Dr. Abdullah met with representatives from diverse groups, including the Group of 77 and China, the European Union, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. They focused on preparations for the seventh session of UNEA and discussed significant environmental initiatives like the global treaty on plastic pollution.

Oman’s involvement highlights its commitment to advancing environmental cooperation both regionally and globally. As world leaders address these pressing issues, collaboration becomes crucial. With environmental concerns rising, events like AMCEN become essential in shaping a sustainable future.

According to recent data from the United Nations, plastic pollution is a growing problem, with an estimated 11 million tons of plastic entering oceans each year. Tackling this issue requires cooperative efforts, and Oman’s active participation is a step in the right direction.
