OpenAI has announced a major investment of $50 million to form a new research group called NextGenAI. This coalition includes 15 institutions, all focused on using artificial intelligence (AI) to deepen knowledge across various fields.
The goal of NextGenAI is to speed up progress in research that no single university could accomplish alone. This initiative follows OpenAI’s previous introduction of ChatGPT Edu, aiming to prepare the next generation for the evolving world of AI.
The founding partners of NextGenAI include prestigious institutions like Caltech, Harvard, and the University of Oxford, along with others like Texas A&M and Boston Children’s Hospital. Each member will tackle specific challenges using AI.

- Howard University plans to create new teaching methods and innovative curricula with the help of AI.
- The University of Oxford will apply AI to digitize rare texts at its Bodleian Library.
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO, emphasized the importance of collaboration in AI research, stating it has been shaped by academic efforts for decades. He believes NextGenAI will enhance research and prepare institutions to use AI effectively.
OpenAI is known for its various products, including ChatGPT and DALL-E 3. As of now, its valuation could reach $300 billion, and the company is looking to raise an additional $40 billion in funding.
OpenAI’s recent announcement comes at a time when there are uncertainties surrounding government support for AI research.
