India has quickly become a key market for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. In the past year, its user base here has tripled, according to Sam Altman, OpenAI’s founder and CEO.
Altman recently visited India as part of his global tour, landing late Tuesday night. On Wednesday, he met with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, various startups, and venture capitalists. He also has plans to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During a talk, Altman highlighted India’s importance in the AI landscape. He praised the country’s efforts in developing technology, stating, “India should be among the leaders of the AI revolution.” He noted that India is working on everything from designing chips to building foundational AI models and applications.
Interestingly, Altman’s visit comes at a time when a Chinese AI lab has introduced DeepSeek, a new model that has gained attention for its low-cost efficiency, suggesting that advanced AI solutions can be developed without massive investments. This has raised the stakes for OpenAI, as they have traditionally invested heavily in their models.
During the discussion, Altman mentioned that while the cost to develop cutting-edge AI might rise exponentially at the frontier, the cost of achieving a given level of intelligence is dropping rapidly. He believes that innovations will lead to an increase in the accessibility of AI, particularly in fields like healthcare, education, and disaster management. “India can lead in creating cost-effective AI solutions,” he stated.
Vaishnaw echoed these thoughts, comparing AI developments to India’s successful and low-cost space missions. He expressed confidence in the country’s ability to innovate and create competitive AI models. He noted the ongoing collaboration with OpenAI could focus on developing the entire AI stack from hardware to applications.
Altman’s excitement about India’s potential is clear. He invites local entrepreneurs and developers to explore their creativity in AI, even in the face of competition. His previous remarks about the challenges of replicating OpenAI’s models sparked some debate, but he later clarified his position, emphasizing that while competition is tough, he encourages exploration and innovation in AI.
