New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently described Operation Sindoor as a powerful statement of India’s readiness to face any challenge. Speaking at the Naval Commanders’ Conference, he praised the Indian Navy for positioning itself strongly in the region, which has deterred threats from Pakistan.
Singh noted that the Indian Navy’s presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is crucial for stability. “The IOR is now a hub for international geopolitics,” he said, “hence competition and collaboration are more important than ever.” He emphasized the Navy’s role in enhancing security and expressed that their operational capability showcased during the operation was impressive.
Over the past six months, the Indian Navy has played a vital role by providing safe passage for about 335 merchant vessels, representing around 1.2 million metric tons of cargo valued at $5.6 billion. This underlines India’s growing influence in global maritime trade.
Rajnath highlighted that a self-sufficient Navy is essential for national confidence. In the past decade, nearly 67% of the Navy’s contracts have been awarded to Indian companies. This shift is part of a broader strategy to promote indigenous capabilities, involving over 194 innovation projects that include startups and small businesses. He emphasized that these initiatives not only enhance technology but also boost job creation.
Today’s naval warfare relies heavily on technology and intelligence, making it essential to keep pace with modern advancements. Rajnath asserted that the government is focusing on self-reliance in defense production and technological innovation. “Maritime preparedness depends on advanced tech and network systems. We need to adapt accordingly,” he remarked.
According to a recent report from the Ministry of Defence, defence manufacturing in India has seen a dramatic increase, demonstrating progress in the nation’s self-reliance goals. The rise of indigenous projects is not just beneficial for security but also adds to economic growth, with projects like the Project 17A ships generating significant employment opportunities.
As part of the “Vocal for Local” initiative, the Navy’s recent contracts worth Rs 315 crore for constructing yard crafts exemplify this commitment. Additionally, advancements in the naval aviation sector with new programs for reconnaissance and aircraft development further solidify India’s capabilities.
Rajnath emphasized that winning future wars requires more than just equipment. Effective strategy and adaptable planning, considering technological changes and human elements, are key. He suggested that the Navy must focus on strengthening its capabilities, involving sailors and their families, and enhancing partnerships with industries and academia.
In wrapping up, Rajnath pointed out that, by achieving synergy among these areas, the Indian Navy will continue to strengthen its position as a formidable force on the global stage.
