Orenda Commodity Services Ltd., located in Winkler, Manitoba, recently announced its purchase of Scoular’s sunflower and wild bird food blending business. This includes a processing facility in Winkler that will now be part of Orenda’s operations.
Orenda, based in Ste. Agathe, specializes in blending wild bird food and offers packaging and logistics services. They focus on creating tailored seed mixes suitable for both retail bird food and human consumption.
According to Aaron Elskamp, President of Orenda, the company is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for employees, sunflower producers, and customers involved in the acquisition. “This acquisition is a natural fit for Orenda, our producers, and customers,” he stated. “Sunflowers represent a unique crop within a unique market. We aim to connect all parts of the value chain, fostering sustainability and boosting Manitoba’s economy.”
This strategic move comes at a time when the demand for sunflower seeds is rising. A 2021 report showed that sunflower seed production in Canada has increased by 20%, reflecting its growing popularity among health-conscious consumers. Sunflower seeds are rich in nutrients and have gained traction for their health benefits, making them a key player in the food industry.
Orenda, a family-owned business, employs around 80 people across four locations in Manitoba. Their roots trace back to farming in the Woodlands area, giving them a solid foundation in agricultural practices. In contrast, Scoular is a large, employee-owned agribusiness with a valuation of $7.3 billion, headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. They operate globally, dealing with grain and various food ingredients.
This acquisition could have lasting effects on local economies, especially in Manitoba where agriculture plays a vital role. With companies like Orenda leading the way, there is potential for innovation and growth in the agricultural sector, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers.
