Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is set to lead an important initiative focused on health financing and climate adaptation in five West African countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. This announcement was made on March 10, 2026, by his spokesperson, Mohammed Brimah, highlighting a partnership with Future Perspectives and its Africa Centre for Future Perspectives.
Osinbajo’s initiative aims to strengthen health systems in Africa, which face significant challenges due to climate change. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events increase food insecurity and the spread of diseases, putting pressure on already strained healthcare resources. A report from the World Health Organization indicates that climate change will exacerbate health risks in the region, particularly for vulnerable communities.
As governments in Sub-Saharan Africa battle rising debt, the need for domestic health financing solutions has never been more critical. Many countries are grappling with frequent climate shocks, which further complicates the task of improving health infrastructure. This initiative aims to equip leaders with strategies that can foster climate resilience in health systems.
“The impact of climate change is not uniform,” Osinbajo emphasized. Poorer communities, particularly in developing countries, will likely bear the brunt of these changes. The effects ripple through various sectors, influencing health, safety, and housing.
To kick off the initiative, Osinbajo will host a high-level meeting in Sierra Leone from March 11 to 13. Here, he will collaborate with national leaders, including President Julius Maada Bio, to explore effective climate-health financing strategies.
