Oklahoma State University (OSU) Medicine is teaming up with Tulsa’s Discovery Lab to encourage young minds toward careers in health and science. They’ve launched the Curiosity Clinic, a hands-on exhibit designed to engage children in health care.
Located in the Discovery Lab, the Curiosity Clinic offers a mix of fun and education. Kids can engage in activities like making casts, running DNA experiments, and even simulating surgeries. This interactive approach not only sparks curiosity but also provides a glimpse into different career paths in medicine.
Recent research shows that early exposure to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) fields can significantly influence career choices. According to a study by the National Science Foundation, children with hands-on experiences in these areas are more likely to pursue related fields in higher education. This makes initiatives like the Curiosity Clinic even more crucial.
The setup at the exhibit was supported by graduate students from OSU’s microbiome lab, led by assistant professor Crystal Johnson. Their involvement highlights the collaboration between students and faculty in promoting science education.
To kick off the Curiosity Clinic, local media were invited on October 3rd for a preview. Students from William R. Teague Elementary School participated, getting a chance to learn directly from Dr. Stacy Chronister, a clinical assistant professor at OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. She demonstrated cast application on a model teddy bear, making learning interactive and fun.
Monica Collington, OSU-CHS’s assistant vice president for External Affairs and Strategic Communications, emphasized the importance of such partnerships. “We aim to inspire Oklahoma students to explore health and science careers. It’s about helping them visualize their future,” she said.
The exhibit will remain open to the public until November, giving even more children the chance to explore the wonders of health and science.
By engaging students early, initiatives like the Curiosity Clinic play a vital role in shaping the future workforce in healthcare and beyond.
