Suprabuddha Sen and his wife, Deepa Sen, are understandably upset. Despite providing all required documents to the Election Commission, their names were not included in time for the upcoming elections. “I don’t see any logic in this decision,” Suprabuddha expressed, highlighting how frustrating the process has been.
Nandalal Bose, a key figure in modern Indian art and a student of Rabindranath Tagore, crafted stunning illustrations for the Indian Constitution. Decades later, his work is still revered. Yet, now his own family faces this baffling voting omission.
Initially, the couple’s names were marked as “pending.” They submitted various documents, like education certificates from Patha Bhavana, passports, and pension records, hoping for clarity. Even after a hearing and a visit from election officials, they found themselves in the same troubled situation.
Suprabuddha, aged 88, reminisced about how he grew up influenced by his grandfather’s legacy. At 82, Deepa also shares this rich family history. Both have lived in Santiniketan, famous for its vibrant culture and educational institutions. Despite their distinguished backgrounds, they are now part of a complex voting challenge.
With over five million names processed during recent voter list updates, it’s alarming that around 45% of those were excluded. This issue isn’t just unique to the Sens; many others have found themselves in similar positions, raising questions about the efficiency of the electoral process in West Bengal.
Interestingly, this situation draws parallels to past controversies, like when Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen faced scrutiny over his voter status. Such incidents highlight recurring challenges in maintaining democratic rights.
