Campaign Against Hunger Raises Over $100,000 in Phoenix
In Phoenix, KTAR News hosted a successful campaign, “Outspoken Against Hunger,” raising over $100,000 for St. Mary’s Food Bank this month. The community really stepped up, with listeners contributing $73,413. Axon’s President and COO, Josh Isner, added to that, matching donations up to $50,000.
The total donation will provide St. Mary’s with $123,413, translating to a staggering 617,065 meals for those in need.
Last year’s campaign brought in $40,000 with just 197 donors. This year, 581 people gave, and the average contribution was around $120. The increase highlights how much more the community cares about addressing hunger.
Jerry Brown, Director of Public Relations at St. Mary’s, shared insights on the struggle for donations during summer. “This time of year, many families can’t afford to go on vacation, and they often struggle to get by in the blistering heat of over 110 degrees,” he said. He pointed out that while donations typically spike around the holidays, the summer months see a drastic drop.
Initially, the campaign aimed for $40,000, which equals about 200,000 meals. But when Isner joined the hosts on June 9 to talk about Axon’s new plans in Scottsdale, he quickly offered to match contributions, pushing the total far beyond expectations.
“Supporting kids during their time away from school is a worthy cause,” Isner remarked. He plans to make this matching donation an annual event, underscoring his commitment to aiding the community.
Such efforts can make a huge difference. A survey by Feeding America shows that 1 in 8 Americans struggles with hunger, highlighting the importance of campaigns like this one. When the community rallies together, even in tough times, it can lead to significant change.
This campaign not only helped feed the hungry but also brought people together for a common goal. It serves as a reminder of the impact a united community can have.
