INDIANAPOLIS — Darius Garland is in pain, but he’s back on the court.
He recently returned from a two-week absence, playing an important role in Cleveland’s 126-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. "I just want to be out there for my guys," Garland said after the game. He emphasized that every player puts their body on the line in playoffs, stating, "We fought through it."
Although the Pacers currently lead the series 2-1, the Cavs made a significant move forward. "We haven’t done anything yet," Garland remarked. He knows their journey is far from over. "We’ve got to come in here Sunday with the same attitude and physicality."
Garland re-aggravated a toe injury during a previous game against the Miami Heat, which had sidelined him for several playoff matches. Initially thought to heal within two weeks, he revealed the injury could actually take closer to four weeks to fully recover. "Y’all don’t understand what I’m going through," he said, acknowledging the opinions surrounding his condition.
During his time off, Garland focused on staying in shape by using an anti-gravity treadmill and participating in limited workouts. Before Game 3, he went through his usual pregame routine and passed his final test just before the match.
His return was crucial, especially with Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley and reserve forward De’Andre Hunter also battling injuries. Mobley had recently dealt with a sprained ankle, and Hunter was playing through a painful dislocated thumb. With these players back, the Cavs felt whole again.
Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson praised Garland for playing through tough conditions. "He’s kind of taking one for the team," Atkinson said. "Even 15-20 minutes from him can make a difference." While Garland’s stats—10 points on 3 of 11 shooting—didn’t fully reflect his impact, he helped ease pressure off Donovan Mitchell, who scored 43 points yet struggled under Indiana’s defense.
Mitchell expressed gratitude for Garland’s presence, stating, "He’s fighting and gutting it out. We love that fighting spirit."
Despite uncertainty about his recovery, Garland remains focused. "I’m going to play basketball. I’m going to win games," he stated. His treatment involves ice therapy as he prepares for the next game.
"Ultimately, it’s great to have everybody on board and ready to play," he said. "We won. Got to do it all over again Sunday."
