Oyo Soars to 7th Place in National Climate Governance Rankings: A Remarkable Leap from 34th!

Oyo State has made impressive strides in climate governance. It jumped from 34th place in 2024 to 7th in the latest Sub-National Climate Governance Performance Rating and Ranking (SCGPRR) for 2025. This ranking reflects the hard work and dedication towards environmental sustainability and clean energy initiatives.

The report comes from the Society for Planet and Prosperity in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment. It evaluates all 36 Nigerian states based on their efforts and achievements in areas related to climate governance.

Governor Seyi Makinde has played a crucial role in this achievement. He prioritizes sustainable development and environmental protection. Barr. Temilolu ‘Seun Ashamu, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, has been instrumental in promoting climate-friendly projects. His commitment has helped Oyo State rise significantly in the rankings.

Mrs. Funmilayo E. Adesina, the Director for Pollution Monitoring and Quality Control, explained that the state’s submissions for evaluation included a comprehensive list of climate projects beyond just the Ministry of Environment. This included over 15 MW of solar energy initiatives and a new Climate Action Plan. Oyo State’s approach has been inclusive and focused on making a real impact.

The SCGPRR looked at five key aspects: governance, policy action, project implementation, budget, and online visibility. Oyo’s strong scores across these areas earned a “High Performance” rating, placing it among Nigeria’s top states in climate governance.

After the announcement, Commissioner Ashamu attributed their success to careful planning and teamwork. He mentioned Oyo’s participation in the recent United Nations SB.62 conference, which emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate issues.

He stated, “All of these initiatives reflect our government’s dedication to sustainability. Our rise in ranking is no accident; it is due to a concerted effort to focus on adaptation and resilience.”

Ashamu praised Governor Makinde for fostering an environment where innovative ideas can thrive. This support has been vital in implementing strategies for a cleaner and more resilient Oyo State.

Oyo State now stands as a model for effective climate governance in Nigeria. Its example shows that strong leadership and sustainable planning can lead to meaningful progress in environmental development. As Oyo continues on this path, it aims for a brighter, greener future for its residents.
