The Green Bay Packers have officially named Cam Achord as their new special teams coordinator. This announcement came from Head Coach Matt LaFleur.
Achord brings a wealth of experience to the Packers. He’s spent a decade coaching special teams in the NFL, with four of those years as a coordinator. Most recently, he was with the New York Giants, where he played a crucial role in their special teams performance. Last season, they set a franchise record with 1,942 yards on kickoff returns, averaging 27.7 yards. This impressive figure was the second-highest in the team’s history and ranked fifth among all NFL teams.
In his time with the Giants, two players were honored as NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Isaiah Simmons made headlines with a dramatic game-saving blocked kick, which led to a pivotal touchdown. Another standout, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, showed his skills with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Before joining the Giants, Achord spent six years with the New England Patriots. As the special teams coordinator, his unit ranked third in the league for kickoff returns in 2023. In 2022, they were number one in the NFL for punt return yards, thanks in part to rookie Marcus Jones, who gained recognition as a first-team All-Pro player for his impressive performances.
Interestingly, Achord’s coaching journey began at the college level. He worked at Southwest Mississippi Community College where he took on multiple roles, including offensive coach and recruiting coordinator. His early career also included time as a graduate assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi.
