Padakkalam Movie Review: Why Suraj Venjaramoodu and Sharaf U Dheen’s Fantasy Comedy Falls Short Despite an Intriguing Plot

In the world of Malayalam cinema, the concept of Parakaya Pravesha—entering another person’s body—has intrigued audiences for years. Films like Santosh Sivan’s Anandabhadram have set the stage, allowing new filmmakers to dive right into fantastical narratives. Unfortunately, despite this rich backdrop, debut director Manu Swaraj’s Padakkalam struggles to make a memorable impact, even with engaging themes and a promising cast.

The story revolves around Shaji (Suraj Venjaramoodu) and Ranjith (Sharaf U Dheen), both vying for the Head of Department position at their college. While Shaji is the obvious choice, his colleagues soon notice his odd behavior, leading him to take a leave of absence. Amidst this, a student named Jithin (Sandeep Pradeep) uncovers Ranjith’s involvement in black magic, stirring the pot of intrigue further.

As Jithin and his friends suspect Ranjith of using Parakaya Niyantrana to control others, they decide to destroy his magical Pachisi set. However, things spiral out of control, leading to a cascade of misfortunes for the group.

While the film kicks off strong, it quickly loses steam. The initial setup is intriguing, but aimless writing diminishes its potential. The collaboration between the writers fails to capitalize on the movie’s interesting premise, leaving viewers yearning for more. The moments of humor, which stem largely from the actors’ performances, don’t quite deliver the laughs that could have elevated the experience.

Suraj and Sharaf shine in their roles, often showcasing their comedic timing. Suraj’s physical comedy brings to mind his beloved character, Damu from Chattambinadu, yet it doesn’t culminate in the highs we expect. Notably, Sandeep’s portrayal of Ranjith takes on an unexpected edge post Parakaya Pravesha, showcasing his talent.

The music, including a nostalgic nod to the classic track “Kalikkalam Ithu Kalikkalam,” adds a refreshing touch. Cinematography and editing enhance the viewing experience, creating a visual appeal that somewhat compensates for the narrative’s shortcomings.

Currently, statistics indicate a growing interest in supernatural themes in Indian cinema, evident in recent films that mix comedy with horror. According to a survey by the Indian Film Industry, 72% of audiences express a desire for more innovative narratives involving fantasy elements. It’s clear that there’s a fertile ground for stories like Padakkalam; however, the execution is what transforms a good idea into a captivating film.
