The Padres have made a strategic move to bolster their starting rotation. They signed Lucas Giolito to a one-year contract, recognizing him as the last quality free agent pitcher still available. He will begin his journey with low-A Lake Elsinore, working to build up his performance before joining the big league team around mid-May.
Giolito’s contract is noteworthy, set at just over $7.1 million for 2026, which includes a base salary of $3 million and up to $5 million in performance incentives. There’s also a mutual option for 2027, though such options are rarely exercised.
At 31, Giolito had a strong 2025 season, recording a 3.41 ERA over 26 starts with the Red Sox, marking one of the best phases of his career since starting in 2016. He missed the entire 2024 season due to surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow. To date, he has a 4.30 ERA across 206 career outings for teams such as the Nationals, White Sox, Angels, Guardians, and Red Sox.
The Padres have been eyeing Giolito for some time, and as the spring progressed, they saw an opportunity that matched both their needs and Giolito’s ambition to pitch again.
As of now, the Padres have a strong 16-7 record, tied with the Dodgers for the lead in the National League West and boasting one of the best records in the league. However, questions loom over the sustainability of this success, especially with key pitchers like Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove sidelined due to elbow issues. They could be out for several weeks or potentially longer.
In the meantime, Griffin Canning, another addition from February, is on the path to recovery following Achilles surgery last June. His rehab assignment is set to wrap up soon, paving the way for his debut with the Padres shortly after.
To fill the gap left by Pivetta, Matt Waldron stepped in, although he faced challenges in his last start, allowing six runs in less than four innings against the Angels. He is slated to start again against the Rockies, making his performance crucial for the team’s immediate needs.
As the Padres navigate these changes, Giolito’s arrival could be a turning point for their rotation, blending quality experience with the urgency to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
