Pak DGMO Reaches Out to Indian Counterpart for Military Activity Cessation: Key Insights from Government’s Rajya Sabha Update

India recently reaffirmed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) reached out to his Indian counterpart on May 10, 2025, to discuss halting cross-border firing. This agreement came about through direct communication between the two military leaders.

In a session of the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, clarified that there was no involvement from any third party during these ceasefire discussions, which both countries accepted later that same day. Kerala MP Haris Beeran also inquired whether any formal agreement was made post-ceasefire, to which Singh responded negatively.

Earlier, on July 25, the government had informed Parliament that the ceasefire resulted from direct contact initiated by the Pakistani side, emphasizing India’s focus on restraint and non-escalation.

Additionally, questions have arisen regarding Pakistan securing roles in United Nations committees related to terrorism. Singh explained that these appointments are standard procedural formalities, based mainly on consensus among Security Council members. Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025–26 term, was appointed as Chair of the UNSC’s Taliban Sanctions Committee and Vice-Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee for 2025.

His comments clarified the nature of these roles: as Chair of the Sanctions Committee, Pakistan’s responsibilities include organizing meetings and facilitating cooperation among members. The Vice-Chair position is primarily ceremonial, assisting the Chair in logistical duties.

In response to rising global security concerns, India has undertaken significant outreach efforts. Following the Pahalgam terror attack, seven all-party delegations traveled to 33 countries to share India’s stance against terrorism. These delegations included members of diverse political parties and experienced diplomats. They engaged in meaningful conversations about the ongoing threat of terrorism and shared insights regarding Pakistan’s role in fostering such activities.

This initiative not only aimed to raise awareness of Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism but also countered misinformation regarding Jammu and Kashmir and the broader context of Operation Sindoor. The delegations reported strong support from their international counterparts, with many affirming India’s right to self-defense against terror threats.

In a world where terrorism remains a pressing issue, India’s diplomatic efforts showcase an active pursuit of global support against such threats.
