It showed flags of countries participating in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to take place in Pakistan starting February 19. Notably, the Indian flag was absent, leading to widespread criticism directed at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Many fans believe this is a response to India’s decision not to play matches in Pakistan due to ongoing security and political tensions.
“India isn’t coming to Pakistan for the tournament. The flags displayed are of the teams actually playing here,” a PCB representative explained to IANS. They emphasized that flags of nations who will be competing in Pakistan are being raised, while India’s absence is due to its matches being relocated to Dubai.
A social media post highlighted the situation: “No Indian flag in Karachi, as only the Indian team faced security issues and opted not to play in Pakistan.” Many are using this situation to voice their frustrations over the political backdrop influencing sports.
The PCB downplayed the controversy, suggesting it is based on misinformation. “There’s no need for an official statement. This situation is being exaggerated online,” they stated. “Different stadiums will showcase flags for the teams that are present.”
It’s important to remember that the BCCI’s decision to skip Pakistan is rooted in security concerns and ongoing diplomatic issues. This prompted the ICC to create a hybrid model, allowing India to compete in Dubai instead of Pakistan.
Despite the controversy, cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi have decorated their streets with banners celebrating all competing nations, including India. The PCB aims to show that it can host a major international event without letting political tensions tarnish the occasion.
The ICC Champions Trophy is making a comeback after eight years. As the defending champions, Pakistan is eager to host this prestigious event, the first since they co-hosted the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
