Lahore: Pakistan Extends Airspace Ban on Indian Flights

Pakistan has announced that it will continue to ban Indian flights in its airspace until June 24, 2025. This decision comes from the Pakistan Airports Authority and is in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules, which allow such closures for up to one month at a time.

The ban includes all aircraft registered, owned, or operated by India. Even military flights from India are not exempt. Essentially, no Indian airline or flight can enter or transit through Pakistani airspace.

This closure comes after recent tensions sparked by a tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, on April 22 that resulted in 26 fatalities. Following this event, Pakistan enacted the initial ban for one month, which was set to expire on May 23.

Just days before the extension, an IndiGo pilot on a Delhi-Srinagar flight faced a sudden hailstorm and sought permission from Lahore Air Traffic Control to briefly enter Pakistani airspace. However, this request was denied, highlighting the ongoing restrictions.

As air travel has been disrupted, it’s worth noting that tensions between India and Pakistan are not new, with airspace bans being a recurring theme over the years. In 2019, similar restrictions were put in place after escalating conflict, indicating a pattern that continues to affect travel and trade between the two nations.

These developments in airspace policy can have broader implications. According to a recent survey, 63% of travelers in the region express concerns about air travel safety amid rising geopolitical tensions. Experts in international relations stress that consistent communication and negotiations are essential to easing these conflicts and restoring normalcy in air travel.

The situation remains fluid, and travelers are advised to stay informed about air travel updates in the region. As the situation evolves, ongoing monitoring may provide insights into future developments in airspace regulations.
