Tirrell announced his dismissal in a LinkedIn post. His letter from Bondi mistakenly spelled his name and didn’t provide a reason for his termination. Tirrell had been in charge of the ethics office since 2023. His role included reviewing financial disclosures and ensuring ethical conduct among top officials, including Bondi. He led a team of around 30 people focused on maintaining the department’s ethical standards.

His firing aligns with Bondi’s recent moves to remove career employees tied to investigations into former President Trump, particularly those connected to the events of January 6. Among those dismissed were both seasoned prosecutors and support staff. Interestingly, Ed Martin, a supporter of the January 6 rioters, has taken on a leadership role in investigating claims of bias against officials who probed Trump’s actions.

While the specific reasons for Tirrell’s dismissal remain unclear, his recent approval of $140,000 in free legal services to special counsel Jack Smith might suggest some connection to the ongoing controversies within the justice department.
