Bradley Bondi recently vied for the leadership of the D.C. Bar but fell short, garnering just 3,490 votes against Diane Seltzer’s 34,982. Seltzer, an employment lawyer, campaigned on a message of unity and support for bar members during challenging times.
After the election, Seltzer emphasized the importance of protecting the rule of law. She noted that lawyers should feel safe representing their clients without fear of retaliation. “Judges need to issue fair decisions without threats or intimidation,” she explained in an interview.
This election result comes at a time when the legal community faces significant pressures, notably from the Trump administration’s harsh rhetoric directed at judges who challenge its policies. For example, several federal judges recently overruled Trump’s executive orders against firms like Jenner & Block and Perkins Coie, citing constitutional violations.
Seltzer recognized the numerous challenges the D.C. Bar faces but expressed optimism about fostering a strong community among its members. She described them as vibrant and engaged, hoping to create initiatives that strengthen connections and support.
In a related contest, Alicia Long lost her bid for the treasurer position to Amanda Molina, with 8,854 votes compared to Molina’s 26,380. Voter turnout was 43% among the 89,000 members of the D.C. Bar.
Bar associations wield considerable influence over the legal profession, supervising who can practice law and addressing misconduct. The D.C. Bar is particularly critical since it oversees many federal attorneys.
The current political climate has many wondering about the integrity of organizations like the American Bar Association (ABA). The Trump administration has targeted the ABA, cutting grants aimed at helping attorneys who advocate for vulnerable populations. This has sparked a strong reaction, with the ABA suing the Justice Department over these grant cancellations.
The ABA recently stated that the legal profession is at a crossroads, stressing that it will not remain silent against efforts to reshape it in ways that stifle dissenting voices. As these dynamics unfold, the legal community is keenly aware of the stakes involved for justice and representation in today’s society.
