Panthers’ Jones Exits 2026 NHL Winter Classic with Upper-Body Injury: What It Means for the Team

MIAMI — Seth Jones had to leave the ice early in the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic after suffering an upper-body injury. The Florida Panthers faced off against the New York Rangers but ended up with a disappointing 5-1 loss at loanDepot park.

Jones was struck near his left collarbone by a shot from Rangers’ Alexis Lafreniere. It deflected off Panthers’ teammate Niko Mikkola’s stick just over seven minutes into the first period. He then made his way to the locker room through the dugout of the Miami Marlins.

“We’ll get him checked out tomorrow,” said Panthers coach Paul Maurice. “It doesn’t look too serious, but we need to confirm.”

The 31-year-old defenseman has been solid this season, racking up 24 points with six goals and 18 assists in 40 games. Earlier that day, he was also named to the U.S. roster for the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina in 2026.

Interestingly, Jones missed the Four Nations Face-Off last February. His career looked different back then—he was struggling to find his footing with the Chicago Blackhawks. After being traded to Florida on March 1, he felt reinvigorated. “A year ago, I probably didn’t deserve to be on any lists. My game wasn’t where it needed to be. The trade to Florida has given me a fresh start,” he shared.

Jones’s trajectory mirrors a broader trend seen in sports, where athletes can often rejuvenate their careers after a change of scenery. Recent statistics highlight that about one in five players in professional leagues improve significantly after a trade, showing how the right environment can unlock potential.

This season, the Panthers are striving for better performance than previous years, focusing on creating a supportive environment that keeps its players thriving. Fans are eagerly sharing their thoughts on social media, many expressing their hope for Jones’s swift recovery. Given his recent form and Olympic selection, his presence is crucial for the team’s chances moving forward.
