High Point University Women’s Basketball Team Shines in Conference Opener
On Wednesday, the High Point University women’s basketball team kicked off their Big South conference play with a strong 78-51 win against UNC Asheville at the Qubein Center.
Coach Chelsea Banbury praised her team’s performance, especially after an 11-day break. “It’s always tough to come back from a break, but the girls were ready,” she said. The Panthers quickly seized control, ending the first quarter with a commanding 25-11 lead.
High Point played efficiently, shooting 43.8% from the field and scoring 42 points in the paint. Aaliyah Collins and Macy Spencer were standout players, each scoring 25 points. Collins not only contributed points but also added six assists, five steals, and five rebounds. Spencer’s five three-pointers ignited key scoring runs for the team.
The Panthers also received solid efforts from other players. Nevaeh Zavala scored eight points, and Dom Nesland contributed six from the bench. High Point dominated the boards with 46 rebounds and forced UNC Asheville into 27 turnovers, translating those into 28 points. Their fast-break game was also impressive, contributing 24 points.
Recent trends show a rising interest in women’s basketball, with viewership increasing by 10% this season compared to last, as reported by the NCAA. This growth reflects broader support for female athletes and their increasing visibility in sports.
The High Point Panthers have established a strong foundation early in conference play, setting the tone for the rest of the season. After this victory, they look ahead to their next challenge against USC Upstate on January 3.
As the season unfolds, fans are eager to see how this talented team continues to perform and grow.
