Paradise Supermart Receives Red Placard from DOH: What You Need to Know About Food Safety Violations

On February 5, 2025, the Hawai‘i Department of Health closed Paradise Supermart Fast Food & Catering in Kahului due to serious food safety violations. This closure follows multiple infractions noted during a routine inspection.

Some critical issues found included:

  • Poor management oversight regarding safe food handling;
  • Inadequate hand-washing practices;
  • Refrigerators not keeping food at safe temperatures;
  • Food not being held at the correct hot temperatures;
  • Mold on food products;
  • Insufficient cleaning and sanitizing of equipment;
  • Grease and food debris on floors and surfaces;
  • Pests, including cockroaches and flies, in food preparation areas.

This isn’t the first time Paradise Supermart has faced these issues; they were also shut down for similar violations on November 21, 2023. The restaurant will stay closed until it makes the necessary improvements to meet health standards.

Before the Department of Health will conduct another inspection, the restaurant needs to:

  • Hire a pest control expert to eliminate the cockroach problem;
  • Clean all grease and debris from kitchen surfaces;
  • Fix refrigeration units to maintain food temperatures at or below 41°F;
  • Ensure the person in charge has a valid food handler’s certification;
  • Create procedures for monitoring food temperatures, cleaning, and pest control.

The restaurant must provide an update on its progress by February 10, 2025.

The Department of Health strives to protect everyone in Hawai‘i by educating food workers and regulating food establishments. They perform regular inspections and investigate cases of foodborne illnesses to prevent future outbreaks, working closely with food service teams to promote safe practices.
