Parkview Health recently celebrated a major milestone with its first graduation of internal medicine residents. The ceremony took place on June 6 at the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation, where friends and family gathered to honor the hard work and dedication of the graduates.
Dr. Susan Steffy, the chief medical officer, expressed pride in the achievement. She highlighted the teamwork that brought the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program to life. “This moment reflects years of effort,” she said.
This graduation isn’t just about celebrating the end of a chapter. It represents new beginnings for the graduates. Dr. Ray Dusman, president of physician and clinical enterprise at Parkview Health, noted how these physicians will impact the local community as they embark on their medical careers.
Currently, Parkview GME includes seven residency tracks: family medicine, psychiatry, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, physical medicine, and transitional year. All programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), ensuring rigorous standards of training.
The upcoming white coat ceremony on June 27 will welcome a new class of resident physicians, marking the start of their clinical training. Dr. Scott Yen, the program director, emphasized the importance of this ceremony, reminding the new residents of their commitment to care and healing.
This year, Parkview’s program has grown again, planning to introduce new residency programs in family medicine and psychiatry by 2026. Since launching in 2022, 122 resident physicians have graduated, showcasing the program’s rapid development.
Notably, the demand for healthcare providers is on the rise. According to the Indiana Graduate Medical Education Board, investing in the state’s physician pipeline is crucial, especially for improving health services in rural areas. With statistics indicating a growing need for doctors, the expansion of residency programs could not come at a better time.
With each graduating class, Parkview Health is helping to build a stronger healthcare community, one resident at a time. This dedication not only enhances training but also ultimately benefits patients across the region.
