As I wrap up my time at the University and with The Cavalier Daily, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions. If I had to sum up these four years in one word, it would be “weird.” Nostalgia tugs at me, making me want to declare these were the best years of my life. But honestly, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced ups and downs that made me question if I was good enough. There were many hours of feeling lost or anxious, and I won’t get those hours back.
My journey began during my first year when I found The Cavalier Daily. Writing has always been close to my heart, so joining the Life desk felt like a lifeline. It allowed me to share my work and build connections with others who felt similarly.
I started writing Top 10 articles, and my first piece was “Top 10 books for launching—and sustaining—your own ‘Hot Girl Era.’” This felt fitting, as it marked the beginning of my growth as both a writer and a person. By the end, I had written 35 pieces, exploring various aspects of campus life, including food reviews and event highlights. Yet, those Top 10 articles defined my experience. Creating new lists was often challenging, but I loved the thrill of finding humor in everyday life through those titles.
If I could offer advice to current and future students, it’s simple: stay the course. If your first paper doesn’t go well, keep going. If you wake up feeling lonely, keep going. If you doubt your voice, remember it matters. Each day, I reminded myself that it was okay to just show up and push through. You matter. Your voice matters. Your story matters.
Before I sign off, I want to thank a few special people from The Cavalier Daily. Cecy Juárez and Mario Rosales welcomed me as a nervous first-year and made me feel like my contributions were valued. Miriella Jiffar taught me so much, and the dedication of Kate Johnson, Mia Tan, and Dana Douglas kept our desk thriving. I truly believe the Life desk is the best desk on campus.
During my first year, I picked up a magnet that reads, “The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of all kinds.” This quote from David W. Orr has guided me through my college experience, reminding me of the importance of connection and kindness.
Storytelling is powerful. Writing for The Cavalier Daily has helped me share my stories and amplify those of others. By continuing to tell our stories and show love, we can redefine what success truly means.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Elizabeth Parsons, Life Senior Associate for the 134th and 135th terms, and Life staff writer for the 133rd and 136th terms of The Cavalier Daily.
