Passenger Movie Review: A Haunting Road Trip
In the movie “Passenger,” we meet Maddie (Lou Llobell) and Tyler (Jacob Scipio) on a road trip that takes a terrifying turn. Diane, played by Melissa Leo, shares a chilling piece of advice: “People don’t take trips. Trips take people.” This sets the tone, hinting that adventures can bring unexpected dangers, especially when traveling alone at night.
As they drive in their van—Maddie’s new home—Maddie feels uneasy. Having grown up in foster homes, stability is foreign to her. Tyler is excited about their journey, but Maddie’s discomfort is palpable.
Their trip is interrupted by the ominous Passenger (Joseph Lopez), a demonic presence that haunts them. The film follows a familiar horror path, filling its runtime with blood, guts, and jump scares. Every cliche surfaces, making it predictable. One standout moment occurs while they enjoy “Roman Holiday” under the stars. The peaceful scene suddenly shifts. Shadows and whispers surround them, blurring the line between comfort and terror.
The visual storytelling is striking. Maddie uses the projector’s light as a makeshift torch to search for the unseen demon, turning the woods into a surreal scene with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck looming around them.
Despite the movie’s flaws, its exploration of fears resonates. It’s a reminder that sometimes, journeys lead us into the unknown, filled with both excitement and dread.
In recent years, horror films have shifted from slasher tropes to psychological thrills. Experts say audiences crave deeper connections to characters.
