Patrick Dempsey had hopes of returning for “Scream 7.” Back in October, he mentioned there had been some talks about his role in the horror series.

During an interview with the Today show, he said he was waiting for the script but hadn’t received it yet. Fans were eager to see him reprise his role as Detective Mark Kincaid.

However, in January, it was confirmed that Dempsey wouldn’t be returning for this film. So, what went wrong? Dempsey explained, “It just didn’t work out… the schedule didn’t match up.” He shared this during a pre-Oscar dinner in Beverly Hills.

Interestingly, when Sydney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell) referred to her husband as Mark in “Scream 5,” fans thought it was Dempsey’s character. But it turned out that Joel McHale is cast as Sydney’s husband, Mark Kincaid, in “Scream 7.”

Original cast members like Campbell and Courteney Cox are back, along with Matthew Lillard, who returns despite his character’s fate in the first “Scream.” Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, who played siblings in previous films, will also reprise their roles. The cast will feature newcomers too, including Isabel May, Mark Consuelos, and Mckenna Grace, among others.

For the seventh installment, Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original “Scream,” is stepping into the director’s chair for the first time. Gooding hinted that the film would amplify what fans have seen before. He mentioned how Ghostface is set to be even more brutal this time, teasing some shocking scenes that might push boundaries.

“Scream 7” is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026. The film will be distributed by Paramount Pictures, with Spyglass Media producing it. Fans have a thrilling experience to look forward to!
