Patrick Reed is making waves again. The nine-time PGA TOUR winner announced his return to PGA TOUR competition later this year. He aims to reinstate his membership for the 2027 season. This comes after his win at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open and a series of controversies regarding his participation in unauthorized events.
Reed last competed in an unauthorized event on August 24, 2025. As he resigned from the PGA TOUR before violating any regulations, he is eligible to return on August 25, 2026. If he complies with the TOUR rules and does not participate in more unauthorized events, he can play in FedExCup Fall events and accept sponsor invitations.
While preparing for the PGA TOUR’s 2027 season, Reed intends to compete this year on the DP World Tour, where he recently triumphed at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. He currently ranks high in the Race to Dubai Ranking, which adds to his chances of improving his TOUR status further.
In a statement, Reed expressed excitement about his return, saying he would compete as a past champion and also participate in the DP World Tour as an Honorary Lifetime Member. However, he will not qualify for the Player Equity Program until 2030, due to the PGA TOUR’s new policy on reinstated members.
Tour officials, like Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis, emphasized that financial consequences for returning members are necessary for maintaining the integrity of the TOUR. Reed’s reinstatement reflects ongoing discussions about player eligibility and financial reform within professional golf.
Interestingly, Reed’s reinstatement coincides with a growing trend in golf, where established players are re-evaluating their commitments. Recent surveys indicate an increase in professional golf players assessing new opportunities and their standings within the sport.
