Despite a limited return to practice, cornerback Christian Gonzalez will not make his season debut just yet. On Saturday, the Patriots announced he is out for their Week 3 game against the Steelers. He had been listed as questionable earlier in the week but did not progress enough to play.
Gonzalez has been sidelined since July 28 due to a hamstring injury sustained during training camp. After a long break, he returned to practice this week, participating in individual drills and some non-contact activities. Coach Mike Vrabel noted it was encouraging to see him back on the field, saying, “It’s very good to have him out there.”
Though fans were eager to see Gonzalez play, it’s reasonable for the team to take precautions. He hadn’t practiced in over seven weeks and lacked the typical offseason preparation, cutting his chances of a quick return.
Without the All-Pro cornerback, the Patriots’ defense has struggled. They rank last in the league, allowing 677 passing yards and a passer rating of 126.1 through two games. They’ve also been vulnerable in man coverage, giving up an alarming 11.2 yards per attempt. The team had hoped that Gonzalez and new signing Carlton Davis would create a solid defensive pairing, but they’ve been challenged so far.
As they face the Steelers, New England will likely rely on Davis alongside team captain Marcus Jones and third-year player Alex Austin. While Davis and Jones have performed relatively well, inconsistency from Austin has hurt their coverage. Opposing offenses have successfully exploited gaps in the Patriots’ linebacker and safety coverage.
The Steelers’ quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, poses a unique challenge. Although he’s not as mobile as he once was, he’s still effective against man coverage if given time. This season, he’s showing a high pressure-to-sack rate, indicating defenses can get to him. He also averages just 5.7 air yards per pass attempt, suggesting he’s not leaning on deep throws as much.
The key to containing him will be how well the Patriots can cover Pittsburgh’s backs and tight ends, including Jaylen Warren and tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith. Their performance in man coverage could be pivotal in determining the outcome.
The Patriots will host the Steelers at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Whether they can overcome Gonzalez’s absence remains to be seen, but adjustments will be crucial in this matchup.
