PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal are rising stars in baseball. The two young pitchers recently received prestigious awards, showcasing their talent. Skenes, just 23, won the National League Cy Young Award while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Skubal, 28, took home the American League Cy Young for the second year in a row with the Detroit Tigers. Both pitchers are proud but want their teams to succeed, too.
Skubal is in a tricky situation. He’s entering his last year under team control, and while he loves being a Tiger, he knows he might be traded. Teams often think about the business side of things, especially when a player is about to hit free agency.
Skenes, who was the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, is still under control for several more years. He pushed back against rumors that he wants out of Pittsburgh. “The goal is to win in Pittsburgh,” he stated. Skenes has had a standout season, leading the majors with a 1.97 ERA and striking out 216 batters.
Even with those impressive stats, Skenes faced challenges. The Pirates struggled to support him offensively, leaving him with a 10-10 record. He was the first pitcher since Dwight Gooden to win Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young in consecutive seasons. But he remains hopeful about the Pirates’ future. “Pittsburgh is not supposed to win,” he said. “I want to help change that.”
Meanwhile, Skubal faced a disappointing end to the season after the Tigers lost their lead in the AL Central. Despite that, he led his team back to postseason play, showcasing his resilience. In fact, during the playoffs, he struck out 14 batters in one game. Skubal is part of an elite group, being the 12th pitcher to win the Cy Young twice in a row, a feat matched by legends like Randy Johnson.
Both Skenes and Skubal are focused on improving further. Skubal mentioned, “I still think there’s more to tap into.” His ambition is clear: while the awards are great, winning a World Series is even better.
As for their teams, the outlook is mixed. Statistical analysis indicates that having a strong pitching staff is key to long-term success in baseball. According to a recent report, teams with top-tier pitchers can see a significant boost in their chances of reaching the playoffs.
Overall, Skenes and Skubal are examples of talent that could change the landscape of their teams. Fans are excited to see what’s next for these emerging stars.
