A pedestrian was hit by a car on Saturday morning at the intersection of Oxford Street and Kirkland Street, near Memorial Hall and the Science Center.
The pedestrian suffered injuries that are not life-threatening and was taken to a local hospital. Cambridge Police Superintendent Frederick Cabral confirmed that emergency services responded to the incident around 9:45 a.m.
The driver stayed at the scene and received a citation for not yielding to the pedestrian in the crosswalk. This violation can result in a fine of up to $200.
This accident adds to concerns about safety for both pedestrians and cyclists in Cambridge. Last year, three cyclists were tragically killed by vehicles in the city. In June, two cyclists died in collisions with trucks, including one incident in Harvard Square. Just a few months later, another cyclist lost their life after being struck by an SUV on Memorial Drive.
These incidents have led to increased calls for better safety measures for cyclists and pedestrians. In response, the Cambridge City Council has set a goal to install 25 miles of separated bike lanes by November 2026 under the Cycle Safety Ordinance. However, there are currently no plans for improvements on Kirkland Street or Oxford Street.
