Despite a challenging draw from post 11 in a 12-horse field, two-time graded-stakes winner Locked is the 5-2 favorite for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational this Saturday at Gulfstream Park. This race is a highlight in the horse racing calendar.
The draw, which included the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) and the Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational (G2), took place on Sunday. Locked, a 4-year-old colt sired by Gun Runner, is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Walmac Farm. He has been on a winning streak, including victories in the Cigar Mile (G2) and the 2023 Breeders’ Futurity (G1). He’ll be making his seventh career start for trainer Todd Pletcher, with John Velázquez riding.
Another strong contender, White Abarrio, who placed eighth in last year’s Pegasus, secured a better position at post 4 and is the 3-1 second choice, with Irad Ortiz Jr. as the jockey. The field also includes Saudi Crown (9-2) from post 2 and Mystik Dan (8-1) at post 9.
Unfortunately, Señor Buscador and Imagination won’t be part of the Pegasus lineup. Señor Buscador, as stated by owner Joey Peacock Jr. on social media, has been retired due to health concerns after his recent workout. Imagination is expected to race in the San Pasqual (G2) at Santa Anita instead.
The Pegasus World Cup gets underway at 5:45 p.m. EST on Saturday. It’s one of the most anticipated events in horse racing each year, attracting top competitors and a lively crowd.
