Penn State at the Helm: Leading Pennsylvania’s Climate Initiative for a Greener Future

Penn State is taking on a big responsibility as it leads the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s climate network, called Prepare PA. This initiative aims to give Pennsylvanians the tools and knowledge they need to adapt to climate change. With guidance from the Penn State Climate Consortium, the program will work with various partners across the state.

Prepare PA focuses on cutting emissions, creating jobs, and building stronger communities. By fostering local resilience and collaboration, it aims to help Pennsylvania adapt to the realities of climate change. The program will offer research, education, and hands-on actions.

Jacqueline O’Connor, a professor of engineering and interim director of the Climate Consortium, emphasizes the importance of community networks. “The key to Prepare PA’s success is the connections we build,” she said. “Communities, businesses, and nonprofits have valuable experience to share. By working together, we can empower everyone in Pennsylvania to face climate challenges.”

To this end, Prepare PA will launch a public website filled with science-backed information. Each year will feature a statewide climate conference, gathering leaders from different sectors to discuss issues and solutions. The initiative will also provide education on climate topics and community planning.

Mark Hand, the director of the GreenGov Council, noted that this initiative aims to unite professionals toward effective climate solutions. “We want to educate and empower future leaders, creating resilient practices for Pennsylvania,” he explained.

Christine Kirchhoff, the associate director of the Climate Consortium, highlighted the role of collaboration. Her goal with Prepare PA is to ensure communities are connected to scientific knowledge. “Listening and engaging with partners is crucial,” she noted. “Our goal is to link strong scientific tools with innovative ideas to strengthen resilience across the state.”

Penn State’s mission as a land-grant university emphasizes its commitment to serving Pennsylvania residents. Peter Buck, director of education for Penn State Sustainability, underscored this duty. “People have a right to clean air and water,” he said. “It’s our job to lead efforts reflecting this right.”

Research shows that immediate action against climate change is essential. The Global Carbon Project reported a 6% rise in global carbon emissions in 2021, the highest increase ever recorded. This highlights the urgency of initiatives like Prepare PA.

Looking ahead, O’Connor hopes Prepare PA will foster a vibrant community working to enhance Pennsylvania’s resilience. “Together, we can tackle these challenges and achieve benefits like cleaner water and economic growth,” she concluded.
