Penn State is close to hiring Matt Campbell, the current head coach of Iowa State, to fill its coaching vacancy. Athletic director Pat Kraft met Campbell recently to discuss the terms of a potential contract.
Campbell, 46, has a record of 72-55 at Iowa State, with a notable 50-40 in the Big 12 since 2016. Under his leadership, the Cyclones achieved victories over powerhouse teams like Oklahoma and Texas, marking an impressive feat in a historically challenging program. They’ve made two appearances in the Big 12 title game during his tenure, showcasing his ability to elevate the team.
Before Iowa State, Campbell coached Toledo and has garnered attention from various professional teams, including the New York Jets, which he declined. He was also considered for the USC job that ultimately went to Lincoln Riley.
If Campbell takes the Penn State job, Iowa State might look at several candidates to replace him, including offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, Toledo’s Jason Candle, and Nathan Scheelhaase from the LA Rams.
This potential hiring comes after a turbulent time for Penn State football. The Nittany Lions’ disappointing season led to the firing of coach James Franklin following a loss to Northwestern. Franklin’s record against top-five teams had fans frustrated, as he struggled to win crucial games and ultimately left after a rocky finish to the season.
