Bill Keyes, executive director of International House Philadelphia, emphasizes that any policies threatening international students present a serious risk to our educational landscape. “We can’t let students from abroad doubt their futures here,” he said.
Recent data shows a 17% drop in international student enrollment at U.S. universities, translating to a loss of about $1.1 billion and 23,000 jobs. This decline is linked to stricter immigration policies, threatening early-career talent essential for a vibrant economy.
Jesse Ruhl, director of Philadelphia House, points out that international students are experiencing heightened anxiety. Adjusting to a new country, language, and culture is stressful enough, but the feeling of being unwelcome adds to their worries. “It’s tough to see them only as statistics instead of individuals,” he noted.
A study by Campus Philly found over 20,000 international students in Philadelphia annually. Engaging with this community is vital, creating opportunities for mutual understanding and support.
