Penticton Indian Band Calls for MLA Resignations Following Controversial Statement: What’s at Stake?

The snpink’tn Indian Band in Penticton is speaking out against a recent statement made by three local MLAs regarding First Nations sovereignty.

On the day after the federal election, which saw Mark Carney and the Liberals take leadership, MLAs Tara Armstrong, Dallas Brodie, and Jordan Kealy released a joint statement. They committed to building a “stronger and more prosperous BC” but criticized Carney’s “anti-energy agenda” and previous Liberal government policies affecting the province.

The Penticton Indian Band fired back, emphasizing that the MLAs failed to address key issues affecting British Columbia, including the concerns of more than 200 Indigenous bands asserting sovereignty. In a statement, the Band said the MLAs’ comments “falsely portray Indigenous sovereignty as a threat to British Columbia’s prosperity” and called for their resignations.

“Sovereignty is not a threat—it is the law,” asserted the Chief and Council of the snpink’tn Indian Band. They stressed that Indigenous sovereignty is a constitutionally protected right backed by both Canadian and international law.

The council criticized the MLAs for linking Indigenous self-determination with political issues like immigration, claiming this perpetuates “racist narratives and systemic discrimination.”

In March, a petition surfaced, calling for Armstrong’s resignation over her inaccessibility and absence from pre-election debates. Controversial remarks by Brodie about residential schools further fueled discontent, leading Armstrong to switch parties alongside Brodie and Kealy.

Recent statistics show a rising awareness of Indigenous sovereignty issues among Canadians, with a survey revealing that 67% believe it should be prioritized in political discourse. Experts argue that framing sovereignty discussions in an economic context could foster greater understanding and collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
