Pepperdine Women’s Basketball Shines in Big Win
Pepperdine’s women’s basketball team is off to an exciting start, boasting four wins and one loss this season. They recently dominated San Jose State, finishing the game at 76-52. This victory marks the best start for the program in seven years.
Head coach Katie Faulkner expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I love the team we are choosing to become. Unselfish basketball was on display tonight, and that is the heart of our culture.”
From the beginning, Pepperdine took charge, leading for all but 18 seconds of the game. They kicked off with a solid scoring run of 10 points at the end of the first quarter, building a strong 21-12 lead.
The second quarter saw the Waves hitting 50% of their three-point shots, with key contributions from Seleh Harmon, Bella Green, and Elli Guiney. They maintained a lead going into halftime, creating a 10-point advantage. In the second half, Pepperdine continued to impress with a 41.7% shooting rate from the field, while holding San Jose State to just 24 points through the entire half.
Guiney led the team with 19 points, supplemented by Shorna Preston, who hit 5 of 9 shots, including 75% from three-point range. Notably, Meghan Fiso stepped up defensively, grabbing 10 rebounds, a departure from Preston’s usual leadership in that area.
The Waves’ defense has been a strong point this season. With the win against San Jose State, they improved their average score to 74 points per game, a statistic worth noting as the season progresses.
Looking ahead, the Waves will soon face a tough challenge against No. 11 USC in Los Angeles. This matchup, scheduled for November 28 at 2 p.m. PT, is set to be an exciting event, drawing attention from basketball fans and analysts alike.
As the season unfolds, the focus remains on unselfish team play and continuous improvement. This combination is essential for Pepperdine as they navigate a competitive landscape in women’s college basketball.
