Pepperdine women’s soccer made history by claiming its sixth West Coast Conference title with a 3-1 victory over San Francisco. This win marks the second consecutive championship for the team.
Head coach Tim Ward expressed immense pride in the team. He said they have shown resilience and faith throughout the season. Winning this title has been a memorable journey for everyone involved.
Going into the decisive match, Pepperdine knew they had to win. After suffering a tough loss to Portland, they were determined to finish strong.
Tatum Wynalda opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Her header gave the Waves an early lead. After halftime, Julia Quinonez extended the advantage with two quick goals, making it 3-0. Despite San Francisco scoring, the Waves held on to secure their victory.
Pepperdine had a remarkable performance, with an impressive 11 out of 15 shots on target. Goalkeeper Jillian Medvecky made five crucial saves to protect the lead. Quinonez was particularly outstanding, contributing to all three goals.
With 25 points, the Waves finished just ahead of Saint Mary’s, who ended with 24. This achievement is significant; the last time Pepperdine won eight conference games was in 2017 when they also claimed the title.
Ward highlighted the importance of the team’s unity and dedication. Their success reflects not just the players but the entire university community.
Looking ahead, the Waves will find out their first-round opponent in the NCAA tournament on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
Historically, Pepperdine women’s soccer has been competitive since 1993. Under Coach Ward, the team has made 14 NCAA tournament appearances and has maintained an impressive record. Their consistent success showcases the program’s commitment to excellence.
