When NASA’s Perseverance rover touched down in Jezero Crater in 2021, its main goal was to search for signs of ancient life in what was once a Martian lakebed. Scientists have been particularly interested in the Western Delta, where a river once flowed billions of years ago. Recently, Perseverance’s ground-penetrating radar, known as RIMFAX, revealed possible clues of an even older river delta buried deep beneath the surface.
Emily L. Cardarelli, an astrobiologist at UCLA, explains, “I think it’s a promising area to search for biosignatures at depth. Microbial life could have formed in such environments.” She led the team that analyzed the RIMFAX data.
RIMFAX sends radar waves into the Martian soil, taking readings every 10 centimeters as the rover moves. When these waves encounter different layers of rock, ice, or sediment, some signals bounce back. By measuring the timing and strength of these reflections, scientists can create a detailed vertical slice of what lies beneath the surface, similar to a medical sonogram.
From September 2023 to February 2024, Perseverance explored a geological area called the Margin unit. This zone, rich in magnesium carbonates, lies along the inner edge of Jezero’s valley. Scientists chose Jezero Crater for its potential to preserve traces of past life. On Earth, carbonates are excellent at keeping the chemical signatures of living organisms intact. Cardarelli compares it to the Cliffs of Dover, which hold countless fossils.
Recent studies estimate that about 3.5 billion years ago, Mars was much wetter, with rivers and lakes supporting microbial life. According to NASA, the exploration of past water sources could be key to understanding whether life ever existed on Mars. As Cardarelli notes, “Finding biosignatures would change everything about how we view life beyond Earth.”
