PETA is urging Nintendo to remove a nose ring from a new cow character in Mario Kart World. This character has quickly gained popularity in the game since its release, but PETA believes the nose ring sends the wrong message about animal treatment.
In a letter to Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, PETA highlighted its concerns. They argue that the nose ring symbolizes cruelty in real life, as it’s commonly used in the meat and dairy industries to control animals. They want Nintendo to show more empathy and make a small change to improve the character. PETA stated, “Every animal is someone. So leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!”
This isn’t the first time PETA has targeted video games. In 2021, they pushed for a chicken mascot to appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and previously, they released a vegan guide for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, promoting fishing alternatives. In 2022, they even asked for a violence-free mode in God of War Ragnarok.
Nintendo has not yet responded to PETA’s request about the cow’s nose ring, so it remains a part of Mario Kart World for now.
