Peter Doherty recently opened up about a serious health scare he faced earlier this year. The musician, best known as the frontman of The Libertines and Babyshambles, shared that he almost lost his feet due to health complications.
At 46, Doherty’s journey hasn’t been easy. Known for his wild party lifestyle in the early 2000s, he battled addiction and spent time in rehab. Since getting sober at the end of 2019, he has been focusing on his health. However, he revealed that his diet of alcohol and cheese while living in France worsened his type 2 diabetes.
In an interview with The Times, Doherty described the fear he felt when he lost sensation in his toes. He didn’t realize there were serious sores on his feet until it was almost too late. People with diabetes can face severe complications, including foot infections, which can lead to amputations. The risk stems from high blood sugar levels damaging blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the feet.
Doherty called this experience a “wake-up call.” He now allows himself a gin and tonic once a week but has largely quit drinking. He is taking steps to manage his blood sugar and is seeing improvement. However, he acknowledges that smoking adds to his problems, as inflammation can lead to further issues.
His struggles with health aren’t just physical. In a recent exchange with documentary maker Louis Theroux, he admitted, “I felt death was lurking” due to his past. He recalled a time when he surrendered to drugs, remarking, “The heroin, the crack… I’ve battered it.” While he hasn’t completely eliminated indulgences, he is trying to change his lifestyle.
In another conversation with Fearne Cotton on her Happy Place podcast, Doherty discussed the pressure he feels to create. He’s preparing for his first solo album in nine years, Felt Better Alive, set to release on May 16. With a sense of urgency, he expressed, “I’d think, ‘I’m dying. I’ve got to write a brilliant song right now.’” This intensity fuels his creativity but also stems from anxiety.
Experts point out that the relationship between health and creativity can be complex. For many artists, struggle often inspires their art. Doherty’s situation reflects this, as he channels his experiences into music while grappling with personal challenges.
As he navigates this difficult path, Doherty’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of health, especially for anyone facing similar issues. Recognizing warning signs early can lead to crucial lifestyle changes, making a significant difference in one’s well-being.
