Phil Collins Opens Up: Why His Health Struggles Have Led Him to Retire from Music Forever

Phil Collins, the legendary UK musician, recently shared that he may be stepping away from music for good. At 74, the former Genesis frontman expressed to MOJO magazine that he no longer feels the same drive to create music.

He said, “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore.” Collins mentioned his health struggles have impacted his passion for music.

During his final tour with Genesis in 2022, Collins performed while seated due to health issues. He revealed, “The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick.” His struggles include type 2 diabetes and complications from a back injury. He has even shared that he experienced pain holding drumsticks and had to tape them to his hands for performances.

Despite these challenges, Collins’s musical legacy is impressive. He has won eight Grammy Awards and two Golden Globes, alongside numerous other accolades. In the 1980s, he achieved remarkable success, with hits like In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds, and Another Day in Paradise. He also secured a place in history as one of the UK’s best-selling artists, with more US top 40 singles during the decade than any other musician.

Collins joined Genesis as the drummer in 1970 and later became the frontman after Peter Gabriel left in 1975. His music continues to resonate with fans around the world.

On a personal note, Collins is the father of actress Lily Collins, known for her role in Emily in Paris.
