Philip Rivers Shines Against 49ers: Why He Proves He’s Still a Force in the NFL

In his first game as the Colts’ quarterback in 2025, Philip Rivers showed he still has it. However, the Colts lost the game 48-27, marking their fifth consecutive defeat. Rivers expressed frustration but acknowledged the team’s improvement in scoring. “There’s no consolation for losing,” he said. “We just have to win.”

This game was notable because it was the first time the Colts scored more than 25 points since a previous victory against the Tennessee Titans. Rivers ranked 10th in passing yards among starting quarterbacks for Week 16, with an impressive average of 7.9 yards per attempt.

Pierce had a breakout game, achieving two touchdowns, both by catching precise throws from Rivers. He credited Rivers for his ability to read defenses quickly, saying, “He knows where the ball should go. It’s our job to get open and make the catch.”

Tyler Warren, a rookie tight end, also made waves under Rivers, setting a new Colts rookie record with 748 receiving yards. His performance showcased how effective Rivers could be in utilizing younger talent.

The excitement from the game reflects a growing trend in the NFL where seasoned quarterbacks are proving they can still compete at high levels. According to a 2023 study by the NFL Players Association, more veteran quarterbacks are extending their careers, often using experience and knowledge to guide younger players.
