By 2035, Manila hopes to see developed nations investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and community-led adaptation projects.
Sugar Gonzales, a Senior Climate Change Officer at the Asian Development Bank, shared her optimism. She mentioned that the ADB is focused on helping developing countries tackle climate issues. By the time COP40 convenes in 2035, Gonzales hopes nations will be actively discussing climate solutions and that wealthier countries will step up their support.
The recent COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan aimed to enhance financial assistance for countries at risk from climate disasters. The agreement aims to increase climate funding from $100 billion to $300 billion annually by 2035, a significant leap that reflects growing global urgency.
German Ambassador Andreas Pfaffernoschke reassured the Philippines of Germany’s continued commitment to climate action. He noted that upcoming changes in the German government would not weaken their leadership in international climate diplomacy.
A recent report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlighted that 2024 was likely the hottest year on record, surpassing a critical 1.5°C rise in temperature compared to pre-industrial levels. As climate events become more severe, the call for action is clear and urgent.
