The Philippines is eyeing the Pralay tactical ballistic missile system after securing the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from India in 2022. This step shows the Philippines’ growing commitment to modernizing its military, especially in the competitive Indo-Pacific region.
The Pralay missile, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), can hit targets from 150 to 500 kilometers away. It’s road-mobile and designed for quick deployment. With the ability to carry payloads of 350 to 1,000 kg, the missile can deliver precise strikes. This capability includes targeting enemy airfields and fortified positions.
Speed is one of Pralay’s strengths. It reaches Mach 6.1 and has a unique trajectory that makes interception tough for enemy systems. Its advanced guidance system combines Inertial Navigation with radar and imaging for accuracy even against moving targets.
For the Philippines, adding the Pralay system would enhance its military strategy. This move would complement the existing BrahMos deal, which was worth $375 million. Strengthening the country’s land-based strike options is vital for its defenses, particularly against threats in the South China Sea.
Interestingly, Armenia is also interested in the Pralay system, showing off its broad appeal. Reports indicate that an Armenian defense team observed the missile tests in July 2025. Armenia’s military purchases from India have surpassed $1.5 billion, covering various systems, including the Akash-1S missiles and Pinaka rocket launchers.
The growing interest in the Pralay missile highlights India’s rise as a key player in global defense. Initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat have boosted India’s status. By providing advanced systems to countries like the Philippines and Armenia, India enhances its security partnerships while extending its influence in areas where China’s presence is growing.
The potential sale of the Pralay missile to the Philippines could mark a significant shift in India’s defense diplomacy, solidifying its role as a trusted security partner in both Southeast Asia and the South Caucasus.
