Philippine Commitment to Climate Justice
In preparation for the upcoming Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FrLD) Board Meeting in Manila this October, the Philippine government is taking a strong stance on climate justice. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently issued a statement reaffirming this commitment, highlighting the importance of international cooperation against climate change.
Environment Secretary Raphael Lotilla emphasized that the FrLD is more than just a financial tool. It’s a symbol of unity among nations facing the impacts of climate change. He urged wealthier countries, particularly those with high emissions, to uphold their responsibilities and contribute to the fund.
The FrLD was established after COP27, aiming to support developing countries in dealing with climate-related challenges. The initial phase, called the Barbados Implementation Modalities (BIM), will offer grants to kickstart various projects. The first funding is anticipated in early 2026.
As one of the most climate-vulnerable nations, the Philippines made a strong case for better access to climate financing during the 6th Board Meeting of the FrLD. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. conveyed this message, noting that the climate crisis inflicts severe social and economic costs on countries like the Philippines.
“Every delay in action leads to disrupted lives and missed opportunities,” President Marcos stated. He affirmed that FrLD could serve as a lifeline, helping vulnerable nations recover effectively.
Recent studies indicate rising global temperatures have intensified natural disasters. According to a report from the World Meteorological Organization, the frequency of extreme weather events has tripled over the past four decades. This highlights the urgent need for nations to collaborate on climate initiatives.
As the FrLD Board Meeting nears, important discussions about operational guidelines and resource mobilization will be on the agenda. The Philippines is poised to advocate for a fund that meets the needs of the most affected communities, pushing for solutions that are both swift and effective.
