The Philadelphia Phillies have officially re-signed catcher J.T. Realmuto, and it’s clear that big moves are on the horizon. After a media session on Zoom, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski shared insights about the team’s recent strategies.
Dombrowski revealed that the Phillies were pursuing Bo Bichette but faced stiff competition when the Mets entered the picture. Although Dombrowski felt the team was close to an agreement with Bichette, he clarified, “It wasn’t done.” This realization prompted him to contact Realmuto’s camp immediately once news broke about Bichette’s signing with the Mets.
Despite initial optimism, Dombrowski admitted that negotiations can feel like a “gut punch” when they don’t go as planned. He expressed that while the team considered big moves, the focus now is on improving the roster in other manageable ways. When asked about further significant spending, he indicated that while the club was willing to go deeper financially, they aren’t looking to make any major splashes right now.
Currently, the Phillies have a projected payroll exceeding $281 million and face luxury tax obligations that could reach more than $317 million. Adding more players could come with hefty financial penalties, so it’s a careful balancing act for the organization.
On another note, Dombrowski confirmed plans to move on from Nick Castellanos, who has struggled in performance and marketability. Castellanos, due to earn $20 million this season, might be traded or released. His lackluster stats last year, with a batting average of .250, illustrate the challenges he presents for potential trades.
As spring training approaches, Dombrowski hinted that Castellanos might find a new team willing to take on some of his contract. Clubs in need of a bat, like the Pirates or Reds, could become potential partners.
In terms of pitching, the health of ace Zack Wheeler remains uncertain. Wheeler underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome and is slowly progressing in his rehab. Despite showing positive signs, a timeline for his return is still unclear. The injury is serious, but past cases suggest a hopeful recovery path.
Dombrowski expressed optimism about Wheeler’s condition, noting he’s making strides in his throwing routine. Although spring training is just around the corner, the situation remains fluid.
Without Wheeler, the team’s rotation will feature familiar names like Aaron Nola and Taijuan Walker. Cristopher Sanchez also stands out after impressing last season. However, adding experienced depth to the rotation seems essential, particularly with untested pitchers also on the roster.
