Pinellas Park Food Pantry Faces Supply Crisis Amid Federal Funding Cuts

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. – A local food bank is facing tough times as financial support dips. The Good Samaritan Food Pantry has been a community lifeline since 1971, thriving on donations and government aid. But now, cuts to USDA funding are making it harder to meet rising demands.

Each month, the pantry serves between 800 and 900 individuals, relying heavily on USDA resources. These cuts, amounting to $500 million nationwide, are felt deeply here. Rev. Ray Simms of King of Peace Metropolitan Community Church points out that recent shipments have contained little protein, a key nutritional component for many.

Kenny Johnson, a dedicated volunteer, shares how crucial the pantry’s work is. “We prepare USDA bags along with donations from the church. We adjust based on how many people come in,” he explains. The pantry gives out a variety of foods—from canned goods to bread—ensuring families leave with nutritious options.

The pantry operates with support from three community churches. Johnson says it feels like family, emphasizing the gratitude they receive from those they serve.

Despite challenges, the pantry remains committed. “By the end of this year, we will have served over 10,000 people,” Simms notes. The passion of volunteers like Johnson is what keeps this operation thriving, showing that community support can make a real difference.

Recent surveys reveal a growing urgency for food assistance. According to Feeding America, around 34 million people in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2021, a number that’s likely increased due to the pandemic’s lingering effects.
