The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed shortstop Konnor Griffin on the 10-day injured list due to a flexor tendon strain. In his absence, Ryan O’Hearn will take his spot on the roster.
Griffin, once a Top-100 prospect, signed a nine-year, $140 million extension shortly after debuting in 2026. Though his stats are modest—batting .270 with 14 stolen bases and a 104 wRC+—he’s shown promise against big league pitchers. However, he does need to improve his strikeout rate, which currently sits at 26.9%.
Defensively, opinions on Griffin are mixed. He has recorded 3 Defensive Runs Saved and ranks in the 78th percentile for arm strength. Yet, his -4 Outs Above Average indicates there’s room for growth, which is expected for a player his age.
While Griffin is sidelined, the Pirates will turn to Jared Triolo as a temporary replacement. Triolo has struggled, posting a wRC+ of just 76 over 900 plate appearances since the start of 2024. His defense at shortstop hasn’t been strong either, with a -6 DRS and -3 OAA in more than 500 innings. He may be better suited for third base or second base, where his defensive metrics have fared better.
Tyler Callihan is another option, but he lacks experience at shortstop, having yet to play a professional inning there. Nick Gonzales has some experience at shortstop, but he’s currently needed at third base. Other players like Nick Yorke and Jack Brannigan are on the 40-man roster, but Yorke has struggled at the plate this season, and Brannigan is still working through performance issues in Double-A.
The Pirates are navigating a challenging time, and they need to adapt quickly as they manage Griffin’s injury. As baseball season unfolds, fans will be eager to see how these changes impact the team’s performance.
