Plukon Food Group has made another move in the poultry market by acquiring Avícola Moraleja in Spain. This company, also known as Avimosa, is the latest addition to Plukon’s growing portfolio, following their previous purchase of Grupo Avícola Hidalgo last year.
Avimosa plays a vital role in the supply chain, covering everything from feed production to hatching and processing. It provides fresh and prepared poultry products to both retail and foodservice sectors, as well as offering eggs. In 2022, Avimosa reported revenues of about €56 million (around $65 million) and has over 250 employees across its four facilities in Madrid and Toledo.
The main processing plant is located in Moraleja de Enmedio, Madrid, and includes a poultry farm and an incubator site in Toledo. Plukon aims to enhance its operations in central Spain through this acquisition, bringing more vertical integration to their business. Kees Kraijenoord, CEO of Plukon Food, highlights the company’s commitment to quality and local expertise as key reasons for this strategic purchase.
Plukon Food operates 41 facilities across Europe and reported a turnover of €4 billion last year, employing around 12,000 staff. Their diverse offerings include fresh poultry, meals, and salads. Recently, they also expanded into the plant-based market by acquiring Vega Insiders, a company that produces vegan products like minced meat and cheese bites.
With the increasing demand for poultry and plant-based options, Plukon’s strategy seems to align well with current consumer trends that favor both traditional and alternative protein sources. A recent survey found that 30% of consumers plan to include more plant-based foods in their diets, further underscoring the importance of such acquisitions in today’s market.
As Plukon continues to diversify and strengthen its presence in the poultry and plant-based sectors, it reflects a broader trend in the food industry—companies are increasingly focusing on high-quality products and sustainability to meet changing consumer preferences.
